This appendix
contains the transcript of activity analyzed in Chapter 4. The appendix first describes the conventions
employed in the transcript, and then lists the transcript itself.
Each "speech
stream" is denoted by a time stamp, representing the location of the event on
tape. Each "stream" generally
represents the contiguous speech of one speaker, but it may be segemented by
other events which occur. A "clause" is
such a segment of the stream, and often represents some topical shift in the
content of what is being said.
( )= "thicker"
translation, for readability.
[ ] = unclear
or partially heard utterance.
{ } =
non-linguistic sounds or other explanation.
... = gap of
silence in middle of speech stream, often occurs when the speaker is
simultaneously engaged in some non-verbal task, eg. interacting with an
instrument.
/ =
interruption of speech stream.
? = a question
is implied by rising intonation, or by content, at end of speech stream or
clause.
. = pause in
speech stream usually marking end of a clause.
(Note: the start of a speech stream has an implied "." since the new
stream constitutes—unless otherwise marked—a change in topic, a point
significantly later in time, or a change in speaker.)
, = slight
pause in speech stream, usually as a consequence of topic or emphasis shift by
speaker.
TAPE COUNTER: This
column shows the starting tape counter position of the speech to the
right. These values represent running
time in minutes and seconds, but run a bit slower (roughly 10%) than real time
in part due to the fact that the original playback onto this tape was slowed
down to make the speech more interpretable.
SPEAKER: This
column denotes the speaker. Bold
indicates the public radio channel, otherwise, it is the private channel of the
pair. A and D are captains of Sydö, B
and C of Nordö, the two boats which make up this pair. Recording took place on board Sydö.
VOICE TRANSCRIPTION: Swedish
transcription from audio tape. Done by
me with help from one of the captains involved.
ENGLISH TRANSLATION: My
translation of the Swedsh text.
OTHER INFO: This
column contains pointers to other figures and diagrams, as well as a computed
"real time" taken from the time stamp of the video camara. Bold
entries in this column refer to video recorded data. The notation "----------"
indicates existance of video footage of some part of this event. The notation [+xx:yy] and [-xx:yy] refers to
constructions of states of affairs (figures) based on video frames which are
approximately xx minutes and yy seconds later or earlier in real time,
respectively. Shadow numbers represent position fixes for the indicated boat
(these fixes are represented in the reconstructions of boat positions—see
Figures 36 and 37).
INTERP. COMMENTS: This
column contains comments which move toward analytic statements about the
situation and events.
